چکیده

Campbell, L. Leon (University of Illinois, Urbana), Mary A. Kasprzycki, and John R. Postgate. Desulfovibrio africanus sp. n., a new dissimilatory sulfate-reducing bacterium. J. Bacteriol. 92:1122-1127. 1966.-The strains Benghazi and Walvis Bay can be distinguished from 40 strains of Desulfovibrio and from D. gigas on the basis of morphological and immunological studies. Electron microscopy revealed polar lophotrichous flagellation similar to that of D. gigas but different from the characteristic single polar flagellum of the 40 strains of Desulfovibrio. Immunological evidence shows that the two strains are related to members of the genus Desulfovibrio but possess several common antigenic components not present in the other strains tested. The deoxyribonucleic acid of both strains has a buoyant density of 1.724 g/cc and a guanine plus cytosine content of 60.2%. Cell-free extracts of both organisms show absorption bands of cytochrome c(3) and desulfoviridin, characteristic for Desulfovibrio. The two organisms carry out the sulfate-linked lactate fermentation and neither will grow in the absence of sulfate. Both strains contain the enzymes of the dissimilatory pathway of sulfate reduction. Therefore, these studies have demonstrated that the Benghazi and Walvis Bay strains should be regarded as taxonomically distinct from other species of Desulfovibrio.

Isolation of Desulfomicrobium orale sp. nov. and Desulfovibrio strain NY682, oral sulfate-reducing bacteria involved in human periodontal disease.

The species of sulfate-reducing bacteria that prevail in sites affected by periodontal disease may be different from those commonly occurring in the digestive tracts of healthy individuals. Ten strains of mesophilic sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were isolated from subgingival plaque in periodontal lesions of ten patients with periodontitis. Characterization on the basis of morphological, phys...

Sulfate reduction by a Desulfovibrio species isolated from sheep rumen.

Several dissimilatory, sulfate-reducing bacteria were isolated from the rumen fluid of sheep fed purified diets containing sulfate. One isolate, strain D, was selected for characterization. This organism is a nonsporeforming, obligately anaerobic, mesophilic, nonmotile, gram-negative, straight rod. Cell-free extracts show absorption maxima for cytochrome c(3) and desulfoviridin, characteristic ...

Kinetic Properties of Pyruvate Ferredoxin Oxidoreductase of Intestinal Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria Desulfovibrio piger Vib-7 and Desulfomicrobium sp. Rod-9.

Intestinal sulfate-reducing bacteria reduce sulfate ions to hydrogen sulfide causing inflammatory bowel diseases of humans and animals. The bacteria consume lactate as electron donor which is oxidized to acetate via pyruvate in process of the dissimilatory sulfate reduction. Pyruvate-ferredoxin oxidoreductase activity and the kinetic properties of the enzyme from intestinal sulfate-reducing bac...

Purification and Preliminary Characterization of Tetraheme Cytochrome c3 and Adenylylsulfate Reductase from the Peptidolytic Sulfate-Reducing Bacterium Desulfovibrio aminophilus DSM 12254

Two proteins were purified and preliminarily characterized from the soluble extract of cells (310 g, wet weight) of the aminolytic and peptidolytic sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio (D.) aminophilus DSM 12254. The iron-sulfur flavoenzyme adenylylsulfate (adenosine 5'-phosphosulfate, APS) reductase, a key enzyme in the microbial dissimilatory sulfate reduction, has been purified in three ...

Desulfovibrio sp. genes involved in the respiration of sulfate during metabolism of hydrogen and lactate.

To develop a better understanding of respiration by sulfate-reducing bacteria, we examined transcriptional control of respiratory genes during growth with lactate or hydrogen as an electron donor. RNA extracts of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans subsp. aestuarii were analyzed by using random arbitrarily primed PCR. RNA was reverse transcribed under low-stringency conditions with a set of random prim...
